To be fair they were mostly joking they're nice people but you know how programmers area they get REALLY passionate about stuff that is honestly not really that big of a deal

You can begin by installing Linux on a persistent external drive, ideally an SSD. (You can also install it on a second internal drive if your computer has room for it.) That way, you can learn how to use it while keeping the option to run Windows on the same computer.
(After installing a second drive internally, you may need to change "RAID" to "AHCI" in your BIOS and either readjust some settings in Windows or reinstall it. Be sure to have backups. )
