I'm probably being very dim but how is getting rid of borough/district councils 'devolution'? Surely it is just more centralisation? We are already one of the most centralised countries in the world and this is just another nail in the coffin of local representation.
It's all about control, which is typical of far-right governments. They've attacked & blamed pensioners for the country's finances, they've attacked and blamed disabled people for the same and they want more state control of family life disguised as the child well-being act. Control, nothing more.
And why is this a decision for central government at all? Surely it's a matter that is purely between the county council and its constituent district councils?
If only they’d remove the police and crime commissioners that the Torres introduced and few people vote for, few know who they are and costs 11% of council tax. Having elected mayors should remove any, no matter how small, need for these political assignments
