The sailboat carries recently graduated Mexican marine officers (many of whom were on the ship's masts & were left dangling after the accident). They are supposed to tour around the world for six months. I understand they were in NY for the 4th of July festivities.
You reported the width of the bridge and width of the ship when the relevant information here would've been the height of each. Not one of your best articles.
The G is not a reliable source, as seen by their promotion of a hit piece about the last president.
This ship got its engines stuck in reverse- it was likely meant to be going away from the bridge. Ships have malfunctions sometimes.
thought the same, anyway listed height of the Cuauhtémoc’s mainmast is 44.8m and the Brooklyn bridge’s deck is 38.7m above mean high water. Not that it matters, captain likely knew all that, but can’t do much about where you’re going in a ship that big without engine power
Excuse me? The Capitan knows exactly how tall the mast is and what the clearance of any and all bridges is. Sailing is not like speed racing, the boat goes relatively slow and you plan your destination and know pretty well how many turns you have to get to the end point.
We are now talking about a height of the mast and also the fact, that sailships aren’t maneuvered like cars, one plans where to go, how to get there and what obstacles are on the way. Speaking as someone with a skipper’s license (for personal sailing only).
Yes what you're saying checks out. NYC Mayor said it was "mechanical mishap", not mistake in planning. Here's a Google maps. The ship left Pier 17 and went backwards into the bridge.
Mi corazón está roto por aquellos que han perdido sus vidas en vano con el Puente de Brooklyn. ¿Dónde están los supervisores? Oh, cierto, F47 los despidió. 8647

We're doomed!
Also: I’m glad there weren’t more severe injuries. The footage looked terrifying.

What do you think this "mechanical mishap" was?
