I’m almost 1/4 of the way through Murakami‘s The City & its Uncertain Walls & I really dislike it BUT I recently found myself 1/4 of the way thru Matt Bell’s Appleseed, wasn’t enjoying it, pushed thru, & came to really love it. …I did finish (& fully loathe) The City & its Uncertain walls, & now got around to reading reviews. The Guardian had the funniest parody of its tiresome style, but this is my fave for its interesting exploration of how the global literature market affects translation

I too started and then stopped the book and have felt ambivalent about picking it back up because on the one hand, I’ve hand tentative starts with other of his books that I ended up loving, on the other hand, I might end up like you loathing it the whole way through. For now I am onto something new.

Yeah, I wish I’d abandoned it. Ponderous prose about men whose main personality trait is being obsessed with a woman and women who, I guess lacking that option, have no personality at all

I just read that (Murakami) and it never got better for me. I didn’t hate it, but I never really grew to like it much. It was only my stubbornness that made me finish it - I don’t abandon books lightly, because sometimes they do have a late surge.

My experience with his books is always that I find them really anxiety inducing and unpleasant. I don’t *like* them, but they’re good and compelling, and they stick with me forever
