I adore this book. It does operate in several time periods and is rather complex (which some people don't care for), but Doerr absolutely sticks the landing.

It is epic and I am not sure I would have the brain space for that rn. Some books are not dnf but maybe later but also maybe never because there is a lot of book joy to be had

I think it does take a while to get into, maybe 60 pages. As a librarian, I found it to be a testament to the power of words and stories and how important it is to keep them alive. It is definitely not predictable but ultimately satisfying. Fwiw, it is still ok to step away.

Imagine yourself as the boy in A Princess Bride film adaptation. Be patient with the book. With each little addition to each character's thread you invest a little more. There are some poignant moments waiting for you in later chapters. I admonish you to persist.

I felt the same (tbh had no clue what was going on for the first third of the book) but something about the library scenes meant I persisted and ended up loving it. (And as others have said, All the Light is incredible)

It is definitely a much different book. I read advanced readers copy and liked it a lot, but knew a lot of his fans were not going to dig it.

I really liked it, the threads *do* come together. I felt the payoff was worth it (although still had some questions). However I was already enjoying a couple of the storylines. If you don't like any of them, it's not worth it.

I recently persevered with Brideshead Revisited which I loathed. The need to say I’d finished it won out. If you don’t have that need then dump it.
