The Milanese will insist that is is now called the Wienerschnitzel actually originated with them in Italy, and giving credit to their assertion, Austrians do call a chicken breast treated the same way chicken a la Milanese, and the Mexicans call their equivalent food a Milanesa.
Indeed, Austrians are way more serious about schnitzel than Germans are, although Bavarians come close. What is pictured above would definitely be considered an unserious schnitzel by the average Austrian. That perfect, snapping crisp crust should be anointed only with a wee spritz of lemon juice.
Don’t do that. You‘ll wait in a 2 hour line w a million tourists. There are plenty of places in Vienna with equal quality but better prices and atmosphere.
Did you go in the winter time? I just walked by it yesterday at 3 in the afternoon and the line was ridiculous. Figlmüller, Cafe Central and Ferhat Döner are 3 Viennese institutions that social media has turned into no-gos for locals.
My LP was born and grew up in Stuttgart. In the US now, and homemade Schnitzel nights are quite the event. I'd place the whole process at the same level as my very Southern Grandmother making homemade chicken and dumplins'...... serious cooking.
Outside of Leipzig there was a small restaurant that served the best Schnitzel.. can’t remember the name.. we called it Stinky Man’s.. the cook and owner would always come by the table…whoof…. You just held your breath…,But he was a hell of a cook
Not my comment-- me. Some months ago I lost my temper with a particularly-unreasonable poster (I don't suffer fools, etc.) and evidently that person hounded the moderators until I got this scarlet letter to wear :)
My fondest food memory is eating in a schnitzel house in kaiserslautern as a 8 year old at a table shared with several families in the center a giant silver serving tray stacked high with schnitzel. Many years ago.
Last year, I visited Germany and indulged in a Schnitzel almost every day. They are simply delicious, and their French fries are equally delectable. I can’t quite put my finger on why the potatoes taste so different there.

I remember the disappointment in his voice when, having ordered Schnitzel, he said ‘oh, it’s just like Vitello al limone.’
Gut Geschmack!
Is this like biscuits & gravy, except the biscuits are meat and the gravy is still gravy, but the pork chunks in the gravy are peas???
I was sorta alarmed at the notion of, like, 3-7 peas per serving of sauce.
Also greetings from Austria, home of the Schnitzel. 🇦🇹
after
crisp apple streudel,
doorbells and sleigh bells..
That pan sauce looks really amazing.
I grew up eating delicious German food. I would say the only thing that could make that better is red cabbage with apples.
Best Jaeger Schnitzel I've ever had.
A thinly pounded breaded cut of meat, likely pork, with a peppercorn sauce.
