President Trump is reportedly hosting a dinner for the top holders of the $TRUMP memecoin he profits from, including a private reception and White House tour.

This is one of the most blatant and appalling instances of selling access to the presidency we've ever seen.

Exactly. And the fact that they didn’t require Trump to disclose tax returns, place assets in blind trusts, or to stop pimping his products is part of the deeper problem.

basically because he would be in a position where his government work could affect the price of peanuts, and he needed to avoid even the potential for conflict of interest.

most US presidents have not been business owners, but they generally held investments. what they have done is put their investments into a "blind trust" where a third party would manage the account so that the president would not know what investments he held.

Trump promised to do that in his first term, and did not.
He also retained management of a hotel in Washington, DC that people booked rooms at in order to curry favor. In the case of this "memecoin" - he's outright rewarding people who are giving him, personally, money with access.

There was a scandal during the Clinton administration where big donors to the Democratic party were allegedly invited to sleepovers at the White House - but Clinton didn't personally profit from that. (Political campaign contributions as bribery-lite is a whole different problem...)
