Also far addicted to the COMFORT BUBBLE! But working class & poor Euro-Americans rarely hv illusions re passivity. There is no passivity for ppl who know tomorrow might mean homelessness or a week w/out food. Class is a part of that unspoken reality in the illusion of the American Dream for all.

Malcolm X was a public intellectual who addressed racism as a public intellectual would: on a philosophical and theoretical basis. Dr. King was far more pragmatic and results-driven. Theory has its benefits, but realpolitik gets results.

Yup. My ancestors survived a massacre where Black folks defending themselves was used as a pretext for wiping them all out. There’s a reason elders were trained for months on non-violence.

I remember my friend’s gramps who was in the Movement saying “there would always be these white kids who suggested violence. And we’d have to tell them 1. ‘Do you think we haven’t considered that already?’ And 2. ‘You can try that, but we’ll be the ones arrested for it.’”

I also am chewing on the idea that peaceful protest is effective because it demonstrates power/violence held in check, not because it carries power in and of itself.

According to my grandfather, it showed how persistent you were. The sheer mental fortitude of not defending yourself in the face of aggression demonstrated your commitment to the task at hand, and your unwillingness to be distracted from that purpose.

It’s more about the statement to them than any results. Hence why they talk over elders. Hence why they talked a lot of noise at democrats for not “doing something,” when they could be organizing mutual aid for protestors, etc. They were projecting their own passivity.
