To add some context: this has been in effect since 2019 (https://ml.usembassy.gov/u-s-requires-public-social-media-settings-for-f-m-and-j-visa-applicants/#:~:text=Since%202019%2C%20the%20United%20States,DS%2D160%20visa%20application%20form.) and for visa applicants.
This does not diminishes or justifies the intrusion in private life, but it has been there for a while.

It’s one thing being a native English speaker trying to go to an academic conference in the US, but imagine if you are a well respected researcher from South America trying to get a visa. It’s been hard enough for academics to get visas to attend conferences in the UK over the past 10 years. P
