Because dying is easy and requires no work on their part. What straight women (or anyone i suspect) really wants is a partner who shares the work of life.
We've socialized our men to expect accolades for doing the bare minimum. (This is a gross generalization, but still true)
I realized a few years ago that i knew a bunch of religious songs about being willing to die for your faith. For me, this was during the time when i was starting to understand that life is good and worth living, and now all those songs feel really gross and manipulative.
In music and art, “I’d die for you!”, but in life won’t cook or step up on child care or vote for equality… So many have this idea they’re protectors, because masculinity says you have to think of yourself as tough and strong rather than empathetic or actually helpful. Bleh.
