Here's my take: Many of us are willing. But then you have big corps cutting down the tree anyway, with an 'oops' maybe coming later. We've been trying to stop them for as long as I can remember. I remember reading a book on climate change as a pre-teen. I'm now 33. And we're still losing the fight.

Think of a war veteran amputee. We can oppose war and the 'underlying cause' all we want, but we know the vet deserves a prosthetic.

Nature can't tell us in words when its missing limbs, organs, etc. But the concept is the same.

It obviously makes sense to give the amputee a prosthetic.

Which species will do the most for the greater good--and support our ecosystems? I'm not sure we need "dire wolves" (perhaps we do) but if we are restoring extinct species, maybe analysis of ecosystems and a coordinated approach are best.

From what I've read and watched, the 'dire wolves' were a 'moonshot'- Much like how our efforts to get to the moon resulted in a range of useful technologies, the dire wolf project resulted in advancements in cloning and genetic techniques.

These new techs are already being used to salvage red wolf genetic diversity from coyotes.

Whether they are actually 'dire wolves' or not is a moot point- Its a nice display for investors, and advanced their goals.

They have no intention of releasing them into the wild.

Not just environmental. Domestic cats are the top cause for bird and small mammal deaths related to humans and are an invasive species who's caused over 70 species extinctions (33 exclusively caused by them). Yet people vehemently defend their neglect letting them roam including pets AND ferals.

Well that same company has done cloning of a species of Fox using other DNA to help with genetic diversity of the endangered species. I think the science allows us to explore further options to help protect what we have.
