Windows is so much worse now. It used to be great, then tried to implement an Apple-style OOBE and were completely incompetent about it.

They then shoved in advert malware, sorry, "product telemetry".

Years ago, I tried mac OS X and was surprised at how easy it was to install apps. Dragging into the Applications folder was too intuitive for me, lol, but that took me on a deep dive of the `.app` directory structure that evolved from the old resource forks of apps on classic Macintosh. Cool stuff.

Can't use the App store without being logged into Apple unlike Windows, not that there's anything of value on the Windows Store.

Only actual 'problem' I've had using a local account.

Of course they also heavily prioritize the app store by making non-notarized apps annoying to start.

This is most notable in that I started out with built in apps needing updates and having to hit cancel multiple times to avoid logging in (one for each app trying to update)

To be fair, it is comparing apples to oranges because Macs don't really have "online" accounts. You have local accounts that sync to your online account (the primary reason JAMF exists in a domain environment).

Totally agreed on Windows though. I choose domain option to create a local account.

iCloud accounts are fairly prominent on Mac’s I find. Apple really really want you to sign in with them and will nag via notifications and badges if you don’t. They still manage to keep the accounts separate however unlike MS. I recently gave up and installed Fedora over Win11.

That's kind of my point, though. You're not authenticating to your iCloud account to use your Mac like you are Windows, so not a great comparison. Windows setup still sucks like Jeff says. I'm a gamer first, so I can't give up Windows no matter how good Proton gets.

That’s gotta be a rare item these days; the radio in those Gen1 units had a tendency to fail, possibly due to the electronics not being durable for the thermal load (they got just a little warm).

Yeah, somehow it's still working... haven't used it much for years, and there is a piece of plastic rattling around inside.

I hate how Windows 11 makes you feel like a criminal for wanting a local account with offline setup.

I don't want to link my MS account to the OS, because the resulting integration into the system becomes messy and dependent on the cloud.

OOBE bypass + turn OFF all telemetry. It's depressing!
