I'm pretty sure that's always what happens when you seek asylum. You are detained until they decide to grant you asylum or not.

When you apply for asylum, you get a social security number and a work permit. With those two you are legal. If your asylum is denied, your employer doesn't get a notice, plus schools need teachers so they can't really be too picky. It is not that complicated if you know how to use Google.
