I remember him telling a student journalist friend of mine how dangerous it is to start believing your own bullshit. That was 30-odd years ago and it was pretty clear even then that he was not interested in taking his own advice.

His last funny moment was actually in May 1987; beautiful blue sky above us and students on a pub crawl spilled out of the United Services and he riffed something amusing about youth being wasted on the young. But as he spoke a chill wind swept the Square and we all knew that was his Last Joke. Sad.
