People truly don't understand the process, the labor and the intellectual and human spark that goes into even the simplest or most commercial creative work because there is SO much of it and it is consumed by audiences quickly and continuously. Creative pros are seen as lucky, not hard working

I think also in some ways this is a result of, unfortunately, invisibilizing so much of the work in creative projects, especially the massive films and games, attributing so much to a director’s stamp and etc. we love great art that looks effortless, when so much effort has gone into it

I talk to people all the time who are shocked that is has taken me YEARS to make my graphic novel. They don't know until I tell them that i had to write a script, then rewrote it, then my editor had to edit it and I did MORE rewriting. Then thumbnails, which are basically months of problem solving!

and THEN I get to start final art and it's still being constantly reworked and edited and then there's design and lettering and color and...it's just a whole thing! A hugely labor intensive, physically, emotionally and intellectually and your average person literally has NO idea.

Part of it I think is the weak arts education we have meeting anti curiosity/anti intellectualism head on. People think of art as either museum stuff that's beyond their interest or understanding, or corporate controlled IP, made for consumption that just magically manifests in the world

So when some grifters come along with a piece of technology, telling people "hey, all you need is this magical tool to translate your incredible ideas instantly into words/art" people buy it! Because they don't know how cake is made, they believe that the Cake Making Machine Salesman is right

One bright side that comes out of this that I am seeing more and more, is people are trying out the machine and realizing "hey this cardboard cake tastes like shit" and it's leading some people to explore why. It genuinely feels, even anecdotally, in a small way, like people ARE talking about-
