I lost what was left of my mind recently when a county official in Indiana quoted Jesus “the poor will always be with you” to my South Bend Catholic Worker pal as an excuse to fuck up their federal grant to help local poor people get temporary housing
Most definitely a parody and funny as fuck. He's good though. I had to read several posts to come to the determination this has to be a parody account. (I mean I think it is?) :P
I kind of expect Stephenson's books to have these really brilliant things in them, go off on some weird and sometimes interesting tangents in insane detail and eventually conclude without any closure somehow.
Some of them stick the landings, others don't. I thought Reamde was perfect. Many people hated Anathem but I'm a huge fan. But I actually couldn't finish Fall. All the great ideas were in the first 1/4
The bit about the need for personal editors to curate the firehouse of online disinformation was scarily prescient. The 'Moab was nuked' (when it wasn't) alternate reality half the people are living in is EXACTLY what is happening today with Maui/2020 election/ect.
It's been obvious since day one these wackos care nothing for Jesus's teachings. They don't want to read the bible, they want to beat liberals with it.
This is not new, just getting some press. The "Conservative Bible Project" dates back to at least 2009. That the people who started it were a bunch of tools engaged in an activity that cannot in good faith be called "Christianity" needn't be made explicit, but I choose to do so anyway.
Sooo I just went on quite the little rabbit hole. I was trying to figure out if Conservapedia was satire and then I saw that it was owned by Andrew Schlafly, the son of Phyllis Schlafly and now I am SCREAMING.
My take on the story of Jesus since I was about age nine has been that it is a carefully designed cautionary tale to teach the *hoi polloi* the futility of opposing the status quo. Fight the power like J.C. & you'll get crucified too! But, unlike J.C., no one will bring YOU back from the dead!
What’s kind of wild is that the teachings have always been subversive…we’re just living in an era where the ones claiming him are so aligned with power that the teachings circle back to being offensive to them.
Also love how many folks claim to follow his teachings but don’t wanna do things like pay their taxes. Like, Jesus said, “Give unto Caesar what is Caesar’s, and give unto God what is God’s.” It’s literally RIGHT THERE in that book they claim to know so well.
People who claim to know about history know nothing about literature. The Bible is epic poetry. We don’t treat the tales of Gilgamesh or Beowulf the same way, but they’re the same kind of literature (and older). “Maddening” is putting it mildly.
The “Republican Bible” has been a running gag for years now but I can’t believe none of those grifters has apparently thought to publish one unironically yet. It’s free money!
I don't see how this all doesn't end in another civil war. There is a frightening vein of people running through the bedrock of this country that will be satisfied by nothing less than widespread violence.
