Oh yea-it’s the best part of living here! It makes crossing the streets and walking around so much faster! Cars know pedestrians have the right of way generally. You still have to watch out for cars but you can cross against the lights and cross in the middle of streets.
I love my city. There's no where else in the US I'd rather live.
Enjoy! And eat all the things. Chicago has an incredible food scene whether you want Michelin restaurants or tiny holes-in-the-wall serving world cuisines, and it tends to be underrated.
As a non-American, while I know about the history of "jaywalking" as a thing the car industry came up with to try to lay blame for car deaths on pedestrians, the concept of it is still so strange to me.
I’m routinely surprised by people who squawk at me for jaywalking when I’m visiting other cities (Minneapolis and Providence come to mind). How do you get anywhere without it?
You have a much higher chance of being killed jaywalking in Minneapolis. Plus there will be a ton of victim blaming. Best stick to crossing at intersections (doesn't have to be marked crosswalks unless you know traffic patterns well) Mpls drivers are known as awful #CarsAreWeapons #WarOnPedestrians
Good to know, as I visit often and there’s a good chance I’ll relocate there in the foreseeable future. Here in Chicago, I’ve been hit by a car while I was in a crosswalk with the right of way and by a cyclist who thought I should've yielded even though I was in a crosswalk. Nothing’s guaranteed.
Yup, its always been pretty terrible here (I'm a professional pedestrian) but since 2019 its gone nuclear with drivers just all out not caring, speeding all over & running reds, cutting into bike lanes. No enforcement at all. You have to be hyper aware & never wear all black unless have LED lights.

Chicago Pizza And Oven Grinder Co. is legit one of the best restaurants in Chicago imho. Cash only spot though and a bit of a waitlist often.
Drivers there also view "One Way" signs as, at best, suggestions.
