Women and children have a unique place when things get bad (or even when things are good, sadly). Not only do they have to move forward despite the physical violence, but they have the constant fear of sexual violence too; if it hasn't happened yet, it will.

Butler tackled this head on with many of her characters and showed the different ways the trauma can manifest but still result in resolve and perserverence. Women can so often hold groups together, despite their own suffering and pain.

And I'm not suggesting this doesn't happen to men. Of course, it does, but this post is about women for anyone feeling contrary. And women and children are the most common victims.

To me, Octavia E Butler is the strongest. I cannot imagine how difficult, how painful, how disturbing it would have been to write those words. But they needed to be written. And so she wrote them.

Talk about strength, Lauren held that group together. And they had more women than men. Even with her sharing she persevered to make sure the group survived. And she was able to document as well? It’s incredible.

There were so many different examples of women and their roles in this book. The strength to carry on, to make hard choices, to still care and love. Women are multi-faceted and unfortunately not always portrayed that way. Butler showed this in so many real ways.

Lauren seems to be inherently strong and resilient, and her father's influence probably helped to make her that way. Other strong women characters like Zahra, Natividad, Allie, Jill and Emery appear to be strengthened and toughened by the awful traumas that they have endured.
