I fear that peaceful protest and civil disobedience require a truly massive degree of popular unanimity. Gandhi mobilized millions; the "Salt March" alone resulted in 60,000 arrests. Today's USA is gravely divided, Maga is blindly obedient, and the fascist right is thirsty for blood.

Yes, any announcement today of a weapons seizure would be interpreted as a desire to leave the civilian population defenseless and would be resisted. This would likely spark an armed conflict with an unpredictable outcome, as the military is likely not loyal to Trump, or at least is also divided.

The Trump regime has been busy gutting the military and filling the ranks with like-minded individuals, but this doesn't guarantee the troops' obedience, at least not in such a short period of time. The military is educated in honor based on obedience to the Constitution, not to the current leader.
