It actually helps put your posts into specific feeds that people curate. I follow a few for crochet and the way their curated is that they look for specific hash tags or yarnball emojis. Its pretty neat.
I donβt use them often - but I do see them as a handy tool for users wanting to find specific communities or topic. However, I think the algorithm here works in a more efficient way that helps us branch out of our usual circles. Thereβs always something or someone new to interact with.
Actually do not need a trending list, although that would be nice. Once you read a tweet that has a hashtag with say
#TrumpCabinetPicks
A topic you are interested in, click on the hashtag and find new cool ppl you never even knew, of posting on that topic.
Click on it, then on the tabs go to latest
Olivia, Imagine how impactful the #SCOTUS hashtag is.
You write about SCOTUS and hashtag it, when we click on the #SCOTUS hashtag we all see it.
IMAGINE how impactful the
#Dobbs
Hashtag was on Twitter,
And yet you are skeptical that they are important on BlueSky?
We NEED big accounts with a lot of followers to define and drive the hashtags. Once a hashtag gets going everyone uses it. A timely one right now is
#TrumpCabinetPicks
Click on the hashtag, then on the next page look at the top and select LATEST. This platform will never take off without Hashtags
Here on a post I made to 60 Minutes, see people WANT hashtags. It is the way we can click on it and follow a topic.
I have literally DOZENS like this where someone posts and I ask them to use hashtags. PPL need hashtags on BlueSky just like on twitter. Feeds follow ppl, ---hashtags follow topics,
Feeds are for people, hashtags are for topics. That is the way I think about it. Olivia, say you wanted to find all posts about #Ukrtaine how will you find them if no one uses hashtags?
I'm willing to listen.
Post - Anne Applebaum, I replied that she should use hashtags. People supported my ask. If we do NOT use hashtags we will end up to be one big blob instead of focus where we can drive action. This account said this, this account said that, where is the focus on Action like a hashtag can drive?
I used to use them all the time on Twitter. Got out of the habit of them. I imagine they serve the same purpose but Iβm still finding it hard to get back to using them.
Iβve Handled that issue by making a separate list of folks whose posts I want to make sure I see, and then have a main feed with all the people Iβve followed. That way, I donβt miss info from folks I really care about when those posts get buried in all the reposts etc. itβs a bit tricky
They can be useful if you have a community of people who habitually check a particular hashtag. I found #reliefwednesday recently, which is an archeology thing, but that's the example that came to my mind.
Hashtags is the mian reason I'm here. Used to use them on twitter to follow a specific topic, threads doesn't use them, so #Bluesky is back to how it should be.
Tip: Some Bluesky feeds have hashtags in their feed description that allow a post to be included in the feed. β In this respect, hashtags are still used on this platform. π
I was wondering the same thingβ¦ Guess Iβll follow this post and see what people come up with. I used the #metoo and it didnβt seem to matter. π€
the #metoo hashtag works for me on Bluesky. I am using a PC if that makes a difference. I think that perhaps it was used so often on Twitter that it didn't help get a post seen.
Okay Emily I'm willing to discuss, how will you find all posts about Ukraine if we do not use hashtags? Say it is a topic you are interested in, how do you find an aggregation of posts on #Ukraine ?

I've got no clue, but being a tiny little thing, "likes" are all I got & it's not fun if you don't even get a like on your comment from time to time.
Wonder how/if it will change?
I'd previously been amazed at the extent of the overlap in who I followed and who those other folks followed: It was just such a small universe.
Just finally left the other place last week..waited a long time to see where to land. Hope this place takes off, in a good way
is what I imagine the response would be
And if you search on not-totally-made-up ones, you find hits.
My layperson's guess is that the more people use #hashtags ... well, the more people will use #hashtags.
I lose an entire day!
Keep that mess on Instagram, where it belongs. π
