A couple details clicked, regarding how HMMWVs being armoured and loaded with extra gadgets made them worse in some aspects. Funny thing is, what came to mind isn't what the Sdafa article adresses:

What I deduced is that, among US troops and other forces equipped with "size plus" Humvees, the increased load forced them to use whatever good enough roads were available in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere. And that would have made their routes that much more predictable.

And that would have made them more likely to be hit by IEDs and ambushes, even if the number of fatalities decreased due to upgrading Humvees.

But I didn't find any data if Humvees were hit more than before, due to lost off-road capabilities.
