One of Michael Gove's biggest legacies on the education system is the SEND crisis. Making the curriculum less inclusive, championing high control behaviourist strategies and putting a block on new specialist school places.

I listened to @natashadevon.bsky.social ‘s excellent programme on Saturday & it was great to hear autistic voices being represented. One thing saddened me was the repeated use of “high functioning” & the misrepresentation of autism as a linear issue from “high” to “low”

Often autistic people who appear “high functioning” to observers are putting high levels of effort into masking

here’s an article on how high/low functioning labels can result in autistic people labled “high functioning” failing to get support they need, & those labeled “low functioning” being restricted in self actualisation & a lack of societal recognition of strengths

Thank you for this. Do you have any thoughts on how I can articulate what I mean without using high functioning - eg autistic people who are able to work etc and don’t depend on others for their care ?

I think you have just phrased it perfectly! 😀 though please be aware that only 30% of diagnosed autistic adults are in work, and many women (& some men) who are undiagnosed & in work get diagnosed when they have a complete autistic burnout, often never to work again, due to the.. 1/6
