Indeed, and it's not an imaginary example - General Wolfe is supposed to have said that he'd rather have written Gray's "Elegy in a Country Churchyard" than won the battle.

Yes, although this fits so well with the 1840-1914 mythology of white Anglican gentleman behaviour that I am cautious about accepting it as really factual:) Cf Herodotus on Thermopylae.
