dess had a dark fountain opened directly on/inside her. turning her into a sort of hybrid between a lightner and titan.

we know the titans are what happens when a dark fountain is forced to bring another dark fountain to life. and we know that usually lightners who stumble into dark worlds-

have little to none change done to their appearance and personality, even if their dead (as we saw with gerson). however the knight looks complete different from any Lightner, so it couldn't be carol since shes completely normal in the light world.

something we dont know, is what happens when a dark world is forced to open inside a lightner, organs don't have minds of their own, but at the same time, their alive. the most likely solution for when this happens is for the dark fountain to "fuse" with the lightner. in a way, bringing it to life-

, just like what happens in the process of summoning a titan. the reason it took years for dess to return as the knight could be that it takes longer for hybrids to "hatch" then it does pure titans. as for why dess is trying to end the world, my current theory is that this process "fractures"-

lightners. breaking apart their very mind and soul. the parts that get fused to the fountain make up the hybrid's personality, and the parts that are lost remain trapped inside the dark world within the hybrid. they aren't fully separated, rather they're broken apart and put together the wrong way.
