The controller confirmed that the helicopter was using a visual on the plane. The helicopter said they were going to watch for the plane and ended up hitting it anyway. There is some speculation that he was confused by the local lights that are in that area.

Night vision gives you zero depth perception. I did a humvee course in the Marines wearing those damn things and we all kept hitting eachother. But we did it on base for this exact reason.
Were you using the monocular? I maintained and built helicopter NVGs during my service and we had the binocular version. You definitely have depth perception.
