For example: "We begin by adopting the formal deﬁnition of computational irreducibility proposed by the author in [3]" WTF. The starting point is something unknown, obscure, not generally accepted, far outside the intellectual norm, buried in some other, earlier arcane paper. Arghh!!!!

I dunno. What do you do with guys like this? They're clearly smart. But they need some advisor, some kind of supervision, feedback or critique, someone who can show them how to create actual results that actual people will pay attention to. Instead of sinking into obscurantism.
