people need to ask themselves whether the primary goal of protesting is to make the actions being protested less popular or if it’s to make you yourself as the protester feel validated

For instance, a good reason to fly the U.S. flag at a protest against the regime is that I think a National Guard company is meaningfully less likely to fire on a crowd full of U.S. flags.
