ππ«Did you know that government jobs used to be awarded through a patronage/spoils system? This changed in 1895 when Teddy Roosevelt implemented merit-based civil service positions.

π§βπΌThis βprofessionalizingβ of the civil service ensured that gov jobs would be awarded based on merit, with equal opportunity for all and no preference given based upon political beliefs.
π The goal of the Trump WH is not to cut costs but to eliminate the professional civil service. He wants all government staff to swear loyalty, not to the Constitution, but to Trump himself.
πΊπ¦ Suddenly, and not accidentally, people who work for the American federal government are having the same experience as people who find themselves living under foreign occupation.
I assume that the GOP plan is to have an unelected special administrator who runs everything, and each president just "hires" that unelected administrator. I also don't expect them to allow democratic candidates to win the presidential election, or enough seats to change the makeup of Congress
We already have that system. That's what all these Congressional hearings for Dept heads are about. But these fuckers are firing hourly workers, park rangers, nurses.
I mean that musk will keep overseeing the entire government while they trade GOP presidents around. I'm expecting them to decide that anyone who didn't vote for MAGA-approved candidates can be fired
Im fully aware of their intentions to turn us into an autocracy. But their argument is "we're JUST doing this" in the meantime. My point is that argument is logistically impossible.
Definitely. I've seen it take over a year to hire new people, in LE-sensitive positions, even without a clearance requirement. Once that person's hired, they need to be trained, and that can take even longer before they're fully capable of performing all their duties without constant supervision
Teddy Roosevelt did some terrible things, by overall he was a decent human who cared for his country and people in general, and had deep respect for the history of America. By far better than any Republican POTUS in my lifetime.
Roosevelt had the legit 'heroic' background Turnip wants to graft on to himself. Teddy did the work - mostly, not entirely, on the right side of history. Turnip just wants the photo-op.
