They can take your phone and if you use Face ID they can open your phone by pointing it at you. If you use a passcode, you do not have to supply that code. They will have to get a warrant if they want to open it later.
iPhone and I think other phones disable your Face ID and require passcode if you repeatedly push the lock button like 5 times in a row. Do it before getting into a detained situation.
Ooooh, didn't know that. Good to know! If you plan before you go to a protest, you can turn off both location services and Face ID. Still a really good idea to turn off your phone off completely before being detained, if possible.
