Eventually they unintentionally abandoned their homes after having suffered several setbacks in their escapades, endangering themselves and ultimately getting themselves captured, somehow landing them in the Eastern Kingdoms.

Anyway, without getting too grim in detail about how he ended up there, he did most of his growing up in Westfall. You might be able to read between the lines from here and realize how he became a gunslinger😁
As for his silver drip - it's his connection to his hometown and his family. With so much silver at their disposal they could fashion it into jewelry, trinkets, armor, etc. They wore it with pride, and so did he, hence the silver tusks.
