"When Charleston fell, one of the first things those emancipated men and women did was to give the fallen Union [POW's] a proper burial.
They exhumed the mass grave and reinterred the bodies in a new cemetery with a tall whitewashed fence inscribed with the words: “Martyrs of the Race Course.”

The formerly enslaved people were honoring the sacrifice they made to move the U.S closer to what it had been saying it already was— what the Declaration of Independence was bragging about but not delivering on.

For ever fallen soldier, there is always a family and a community that suffers that loss and make that sacrifice. It just feels like leaders are too loose with other people's lives, but want to wave flags on holidays while cutting services they need.
Because eff that guy.
