And if anyone thinks that librarians don’t face a barrage of public hostility on the regular daily, they do! Especially since in Ak they now also conduct frontline council services.
If they wanted to make anything close to the point they were trying to make the should have had a pair of mixed gender librarians versus a pair of mixed gender fisheries officers
It's like they tried to throw the ball but forgot to pick up the ball first
Well...you hope... (the things I found in books in an academic library doesn't even compare to the public system, and there were still some gross things found when doing the returns)
I have worked in the public system and my worst find was a tooth, in a small plastic bag, that apparently had been used as a bookmark. Never a fish though.
It was an example they picked out because they are inherently sexist and can not see the clear corelation in the value added to the employer by a librarian and a fisheries officer. They are trying to make gender equity about like for like instead of work of equal value. Shifting the goal posts
It's actually a very good example because people balk at the title vs title but laying out the similarities of the actual role is quite clear, in fact a librarian requires a qualification that fisheries officer don't. Yeah I fell down a hole
Honestly, I actually think our Librarians deserve to feel a little insulted at the comparison to fisheries officers, because they so obviously do much more and require a more specialized skillset.
Actually the qualifications for a fisheries officer is a 3 month course vs undergraduate or postgraduate for a librarian. After 3 or 4 years at uni you can make the same money as a fish measurer. Big whoop Act.
And ageism. You’d hope the person on the left, after being in the field for some decades, would be earning at least as much as, if not more than a relatively freshly minted fish guy - commensurate with her experience and specialized skills.
and hey come on be fair Jolisa and have some respect for the academic rigour required of that fisheries officer not only studying for and passing their drivers license test but also a 3 week course
To add insult to injury, BVV is Minister for Internal Affairs, responsible for the National Library. Clearly she didn't read her briefing as incoming minister.
Divide and conquer, and the purported meritocracy is a strong characteristic of the right. Both a method of distraction away from the real issue - you do the same job you should get the same pay irrespective of age or gender.
To qualify as a librarian you need a university degree.
To qualify as a fisheries officer you need a “strong understanding of the marine environment and relevant laws and regulations”, a full drivers licence, and to pass a fitness test.
Absolutely bloody YES a librarian should be paid more.
On top of these idiots being unable to apply logic and facts to any of their bullshit arguments, the obvious framing of “fisheries officer is MANS work, but librarian is a girls job” is frankly fucking disgusting 🤮
This won't be the first time one of their online ads has backfired badly. Their use of the Deathstar - a genocidal war machine - was badly miscalculated.
But that's the thing with far right zealots - they're so wound up in their ideology that they miss the obvious.

How is this even a coherent argument?
Evidence? Landlord Luxon. I rest my case.
