So to punish them you elected a guy who repeatedly said he was going to make things even more expensive by slapping tariffs on everything. If that was THE major concern why didn’t those folks so concerned about it read up in how tariffs work?

The voters either didn't care abiut his many crimes or actively wanted to help him get away with them. They voted for tariffs which will reignite inflation. They voted for mass deportations which besides being a humanitarian crisis on a scale of the holocaust, will devastate food producers...
They voted for the rise of the oligarchy with a Cabinet composed of billionaires and billionaire appointees like Musk and Ramaswamy driving up the unemployment rate while enriching themselves. They voted for the end of public health while the virus continues to evolve and kill...
They voted against teachers and the public education system itself. They voted against their own interests, against the interests of all of humanity and the environment. There is no way to spin their votes as anything but cruel and stupid.
They voted to allow corporations to pollute without consequence, to steal from consumers without recourse, to abuse workers at will. They voted to allow Putin to take Ukraine and whatever else he wants. They voted for the end of hope for Palestinian people (and yes, the other party offered little)
They voted to scapegoat immigrants and trans people because that's what bullies do. They voted for a regime that will bully anyone who resists their worst impulses. They voted to kill Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, and SNAP benfits, which will literally kill people...
They voted against indigenous land rights, indigenous sovereignty & protection of public lands. They voted against bodily autonomy. They voted for banning books & defunding libraries. They voted for private prisons & private military contractors & the lobbyists who demand profits over liberties...
I can’t believe I’m protesting the same shit again. That a bunch of wizen old men can decide to restrict the rights of over half the country.

Many of these voters have no idea of the exact shapes of what they voted for (and against).
Like voters in many similar lands at this time of post-covid inflation, they voted against the incumbent, because things just don't *feel great them.
