ESPECIALLY if you sold audio rights recently but the book hasn't been recorded yet!

Scribd/Everand is apparently winding down their "original content" efforts, yet didn't see fit to notify several self-pub authors I know, and we're all searching for answers.

Oh, really? Yikes. I did sell them an exclusive audiobook and it's been up for a couple of years there. But yeah, from what I know my one contact in the company got unceremoniously laid off recently.

Yikes, indeed, and on BIKES so far as I'm concerned. The layoffs are one thing, but the lack of notification for authors--some of whom are in limbo, unsure if their contracted works in audio will be released--is super, super concerning.

The search is complicated by the fact that point-of-contact acquisitions people were laid off without warning recently (within the past few weeks), leaving authors in the lurch, without anyone to ask.

No official word on whether third-party distribution and concomitant royalty payments on original audiobooks will still be happening, on whether recently acquired audio rights will be reverted, what's happening to previously acquired Bryant Street titles, etc.

You'd think Scribd/Everand would contact authors directly with a mass statement explaining this, instead of simply laying off trusted point-of-contact people and... crickets. This is shockingly disrespectful as well as bad business hygiene.

So far as I know, simple self- or indie/small-pub distribution to Everand through aggregators (like Draft2Digital) is a different issue, remaining unaffected... but I am thinking seriously about whether I want to continue to do so, given the rather disturbing lack of etiquette and business hygiene.

So, again, if you (or the indie/small press you publish through) have sold ANY rights to Everand/Scribd, now is a REALLY good time to start seeing if your contact person there is still employed and able/willing to answer questions.
