You’ve picked up the Want To Cry malware that likely attacked the blue sound Linux OS via a publicly exposed SNB share. You’ll have to do a full reinstall and figure out the original infection vector to stop it happening again. Got a backup?

On Windows - Windows Defender should work. For Linux there is an open source one called ClamAV but I never used it

Without trying to be dickish, this is why backups exist. Viruses aside, hard drives die at any moment. It's more of a pain when you're dealing with huge amounts of data, but I'd strongly recommend in future you make a mirror on a separate drive you can keep elsewhere (ideally fire/burglary proof).

I’ve reached out to their tech support.

The drive has now been added to my windows defender list of “protected folders” but that presumes the ware got in via the pc - I have no way of knowing that with my level of skill.

That's not a bad idea but I'm guessing that because everything else wasn't encrypted, it was a more direct attack on the device. It may not feel like it but you might have got off lightly.

So next question, and forgive me for asking what may be a silly question, how do you know it’s ransomware and not something else? Is there a specific message? My old work got hit by RW and it was a nightmare.

Can you contact the bluOS maker for some support? They may have a solution.
