The point is so I can avoid the books I know I won't like and satisfy my curiosity on why some people do like "classics."
If I ever start the "I'm better for reading xyz," then somebody punch me. That's a level of elitism I don't need in my system.
Counterpoint: Books become classics because they have universal themes that are still relevant no matter the time period. Saying that reading a book that is considered a classic, regardless of whether or not it's easy to read, is "elitism" is just anti-intellectual. Exposing yourself to books 1/2
that may not be your preferred genre broadens your mind and gives you greater understanding of the world. 'I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings' is certainly not an easy read, but it helped me understand resilience and how a person can persevere through multiple hardships. 2/2
I am a 52 year old autistic woman who has at LEAST 3 different, unrelated trains of thought going through my head every waking hour of the day. If my mind was broadened any further, I'd likely have to be institutionalized. 😂
All levity aside, though, I have got some fairly extreme mental health issues. I've got some fairly extreme anxiety issues and clinical depression, all of which are exacerbated by PTSD as a result of an extremely violent event from my childhood.
