Cinco de Mayo commemorates Mexican forces’ defeat of the French at the Battle of Puebla and, with the help of the United States, later complete expulsion of Napoleon from Mexico. It became a major Mexican American holiday because it honors how the two nations worked together to defeat imperialism.
