Seeing older kids biking down the sidewalk on residential streets is a telltale sign that bike infrastructure isn’t comfortable enough. We need more diverters on our neighborhood bikeways so that all ages and abilities feel safe biking.

We have bike lanes here in suburban Salt Lake area. If you want to call them that. They're not safe at all. So, barely anyone uses them. We encourage our kids to stay on sidewalks, too. It's just safer that way.
In what world does someone on an open air vehicle survive unscathed when hit by a 1 or 2 ton motorized vehicle? Accidents happen. Bike paths (not on a shared road) or sidewalks make sense. BTW today an idiot on a bike chose to ride against the traffic on a 2-lane street on the side with no sidewalk.
Yeah, not happening. Senior, walking to the bus stop 2 blocks away in Florida heat isn't feasible. Love to be able to ride an electric bike, but balance issues have arrived with age.
So you know where I live? And from what I know, bicycle riders must go with the flow of traffic, not against it. This rider chose a dangerous situation. Not atypical behavior from bicycle riders.
I hate that I know that this is basically as dangerous if not more than riding in the road. The more curb cuts the more chances a driver in a car is not going to stop properly at the stop bar and look for that kid on his bicycle.
Putting children into roadways with huge cars is insane. And until proper infrastructure is built shaming car drivers is not the answer. Build bikeways off of roadways not into roadways. Children riding bikes is not transportation it’s recreation.
You can say this, but then the cars roll across xwalks and run stops, so we’re not even safe on the sidewalks.
Drivers SHOULD be shamed for not being aware. If you can’t see or can’t get by, JUST SLOW DOWN.
I make my 10 yr old use sidewalk bc very few adult drivers care enough about others enough to GET OFF THEIR CELL PHONES
My other child was hit on his bike by an idiot driver who was not looking. He was thrown across the hood of that car. Thankfully w superficial injuries.
Caregivers don't realize that biking on the sidewalk is much more dangerous. They will tell their kids to do so. Drivers often back over kids due to limited sight lines from vegetation, blind spots from vehicle design, and distracted driving. Visibility is much greater in the street... (1/2)
...where drivers are actually looking. (Most of the time) Also, in many cities, it's illegal to bike on the sidewalk. If it is legal, you can't bike over "walking speed" while crossing driveways and streets. Of course we are talking about neighborhood streets, not stroads and highways.
Fine then spend the money on widening streets to accommodate the glut of cars and spend more money on bike paths because putting bikes on roads with cars is stupid and dangerous and contributes to more accidents and much more road rage. It’s bad when one cyclist is holding up 50 cars.

The street in question is supposed to be a preferred route for biking. Fewer cars on the street would make it more attractive for bikers of all ages.
