Friendship does happen, because it can, but it's rare
One of the saddest ironies I find in the current political climate, is that prior to my public transition, a lot of my female friends would tell me that they felt safe around me because I never made a pass at them. Unwanted sexual attention was so ubiquitous that I stood out.
Beyond that, I suspect a lot to get at it in terms of broader cultural trends. Economic anxieties spiraling down into conservative attitudes perhaps?
