Water (more specifically, the ocean) as a symbol in Gundam has long been associated with Newtypes. And what is the thematic thrust of Newtypes? Well...
On one hand, they represent the hope that humanity can evolve beyond war and suffering. However, Newtypes alone aren't capable of taking humanity to the next stage - the tragedy of human society turns them into weapons of war and forces them to kill each other.
In a past thread, we talked about how Tsurumaki's experiences growing up in post-war Japan likely influenced his choice of focusing on Side 6. The fake gravity in Side 6 is tied to the feeling of aimlessness born in a society that is both traumatized by war and yet unwilling to acknowledge it.
In GQuux, Machu's lamentation of the fake gravity in Side 6 concludes with her jumping into a swimming pool and noting the lack of a real ocean. How can humanity evolve if it refuses to acknowledge the atrocities of its own creation? I think that'll be something to pay attention to in the future.
