or even "people are actually pretty rational and not that impressionable." All of this seems quite ahistorical and unscientific, even in the context of Meta's own history and own research. Do the ads influence people but not the malicious posts? It doesn't hold water. 5/7

Arguably, the clearest reference example is exactly the meme that "censorship" is one of the biggest problems in America.

And even that meme is a contradiction with the top level thesis - the omission of posts matters (censorship) but *not* their presence (propaganda, hate speech). 7/7

Excellent thread and point to how experts in one field can make very incorrect assumptions about other fields. We know propaganda and information control work. It’s how we rallied for WWI and WWII and how China suppresses internal opposition. Blind to think these decisions are neutral.

And one last thing. People are not rational they are iterative with variables they bequeath to the next generation. The iteration is Observation-belief-judgement-action then the cycle just repeats.

Moral pedagogy is actually kinda subtle. It isn't like teaching facts. It *evokes positive emotional attachment* to wise norms.

It’s a good trick. functioning democracy requires multiple elements (there’s more to the constitution than articles 1 and 2) so you manufacture a dilemma where people are supposed to choose between them rather than balance them. Works well in a terminally divided society. Got the job done.
