I hope the US military leadership have strong democratic principles.

Brazil was an inch away from having another coup because the Army leader refused to side with Bolsonaro when he tried to overthrow the election results.

The next US elections are key.

2 thoughts on this:

1. Waiting for the armed forces to enforce democratic rule is setting democracy up for failure. Military leaders can be discharged and replaced, and Trump has threatened to do so [1]. Its debatable if he is allowed to [2, 3], but autocrats aren't usually bound by law.

2. Political resistance, from within and without of the country, was key to both tutoring the military and limiting Bolsonaro's actions. This has been implied many times by Bolsonaro supporters in the govt and military when they say there was no "mood" or "external support" [4, 5].

Great points. But if he tries to replace the defense leadership and is stopped by the judiciary, so what if he disagrees? Why would he stop there? I have a strong feeling they will need all parts working to stop him: public opinion, the judiciary and ultimately the defense apparatus.

Obviously the military are not the primary enforcers of the democratic system. But they can certainly act as a last line of defense. It happened already in 2020 in the US, and there were other examples in Turkey and Bolivia.

All while Trump, himself, has the only recognized case, AND a case of off-the-charts severity, of Biden Derangement Syndrome. Now, I appreciate some of what Biden got done during his time in office, but having Trump's level of monomaniacal focus, this late in the game, is utterly bizarre to me.
