we desperately need fans to:
A. know that AI localization will absolutely ruin their favorite manga, anime, games, and books
B. fan outrage over AI use is one of the best and only ways we can fight back.
most loc professionals are freelance. we're not union. we have no power.
Fans must speak up.

Sadly I once knew a French guy who said they should use AI to get rid of the woke translations we stopped being friends after that.
He would complain about stuff like the censorship of fire emblem engage yet he was so willing to sell out to AI.
I strongly suspect that Netflix is using at least partially machine translation for their French subtitles and they are hot garbage.
But it's a laugh to say AI will ruin translations, when localizers have repeatedly shown they're willing to do that themselves.
And no, FE Fates being a bad game to begin with does not justify the dogshit localization it got.
Have you truly never seen a good localization?
Across games, anime and even trading cards
I'm not down with that.
Comparatively, no, I don't think AI could do more damage.
I would adore that. That seems to be rare, however.
One of the most famous unions out there is SAG-AFTRA, they can absolutely unionize. It just takes collaboration. Don't spread that kind of dangerous misinformation.
It's not impossible, but it'd be very challenging to for any new industry to form a union of that caliber
But to be fair, that's the risk all new unions face.
The hope would be the pain of hiring new people, combined with the public backlash of screwing over others, might be enough to coerce a few of those corporations into playing ball.
Granted, that does require a lot of public goodwill
At best you will still need a translator to read the original and the translation to make sure is not just correct, but accurate in vibe and spirit.
And at that point you might as well just let them do it without the LLM!
And yes AI can't do good translations. There needs to be people looking at it before it's published. But AI is helpful in the process of translation. It does speed up the process.
And the politics of the companies that do this (boot licking and money making) is so bad it makes the quality of the work done by humans really poor. But AI is still way worse.
