Reminded of what we called Hummingbird Bees from when I was younger. Could never identify them and would still try to catch them with our bare hands.

That said it is nice folks are suggesting what they could have been based on flimsy anecdotes.
Who knows, the yellow tint could have been from the pollon stuck to their bodies from the nearby flowers.
We have those out here in Sacramento and if I hadn't been told they were moths, I would have assumed bee. XD
