Why can't we just have a Superman film? Everything has to be an ensemble now, I've lost half my excitement for the proper Superman film. I thought we'd be back to the core of what makes a good movie after the last few missteps.

Fair question. I think, just from the trailers, Gunn might be making a story centered on whether the world needs Superman. One way to do that is to use foils like Gardner, and I think that's part of what we're going to see.
For the story (it looks like) they’re trying to tell, I think having other heroes in play is importantly. I don’t think Supes having a version of the Kingdom Come logo is a coincidence.
We have never really seen a Superman movie set in a fully populated DC Universe, even though the VAST majority of Superman comics have taken place in such a world.
This............IS a Superman film. Nothing wrong with having your world feel more built up, especially since Clark has been at it for 3 years at this point & metahumans have been a known thing in the DCU for over 300 years. It doesn't mean that Clark won't be the primary focus of the film.

His humanity shines in how he cares and interacts with the people, his family, and his friends.
