This has been a pet peeve of mine for decades but it all started going downhill when they tried to show the heffalump on screen. The whole idea is that it stays offscreen and we hear Pooh or Piglet explaining how they imagine it to be. Same with the Little Red Haired Girl in Peanuts.
I didn't hate the Peanuts movie that came out a decade ago, but I also have zero recollection of it. I understand why it wouldn't be possible, but new Peanuts without a Vince Guaraldi soundtrack feels wrong.
I also didn't like the modern soundtrack to the new Grinch.
And the new Addams movies too. There were things I liked about them. The very "of the moment" soundtracks detracted from the timelessness of the characters.
I often complain that story plots are forgettable because I couldn't remember them, but it might just be me. I remember it being pleasant. Can't remember the plot. Jfc, that was 10 years ago???
It was 10ish. I can't be bothered to look it up but I saw it with my wife before she was my wife and we've been together for 13 years. Might be 8 years. Might be 11.
The CGI Peanuts movie was good, but the better choice will always be to keep the Little Red-Haired Girl offscreen, unknowable, unnamed, unseen, an abstract object for Charlie Brown to project his hopes and fears on.
It felt like the makers of the Peanuts feature film were making an effort to be true to the classic tv specials. Not like putting Pooh or Tigger in capes and making them solve mysteries, at Christmas. Oh bother.
