Here's a question for Americans: what's the general public opinion on $1 coins? When I use them for tips, I often get dirty or awkward looks in return which never happens with $1 bills. Have they still not caught on after 25 years?

it kinda feels less “real” than a bill to me. because people will carry around bills because they are convenient and quiet, but coins are loud and worth less than bills. like i put all coins in a jar, because i don’t spend them till i really need them, so you are getting money you won’t spend.
Tipping isn't always possible to do electronically, though. Hotel shuttle drivers, for example. Still, I find it odd when people are averse to the coins when they're the same value as the bills.
Americans have this weird hate for dollar coins, and, as an American, I *really* don’t understand it. Me, I like them; kept a small chest of them as “gold”.
Last time I went to Canada, I was amused to have a pocket full of change add up—I shit you not—to over $35, just from Loonies and Toonies.
Canada got rid of its $1 and $2 bills in 1987 and 1996, respectively. People seemed to really take to the coins up here as there was little to no demand to bring back the paper notes. They certainly do make one's change pocket more valuable. :)
