A roast CAN be funny when you have professional comedians and everyone understands what a roast is. The 70's roasts with don rickles and Dean Martin. Even the 2000's comedy central roasts made sure to have Saget, mcdonald, godfried doing the jokes. Wwe's was just mean insults.

One of the problems is people saw the comedy central roasts and thought they were just insults and not carefully written comedy by professionals. So they thought they could do it. But nah to do insult comedy it takes a serious amount of skill to get right.

The success of CC’s roasts were Greg Giraldo being an excellent stand-up first. Funny first, ‘mean’ second. Jeselnik and Nikki Glaser- excellent stand-ups first, mean second. Rogan et al are not good stand-ups in general then they’re telling hack/cliche/racist street jokes. It’s not the same.

in the evolution of the Comedy Central version, as they became sponsored entities, turned into situations where getting specific names meant more then any relationship they may have with the roaster. I used to love roasts, when I was a kid I saw some of the old Dean Martin roasts and then the early Comedy Central ones from much more recently were more in that style, and eventually it became an outlet for scrubs to say shitty things with, as you said, no timing/delivery/jokes/warmth whatsoever

Not a hot take. Roasts have always been seen as a bit hack but in the past they were harmless things comedians did for fun. Now there are comedians who only do “roast style” comedy. These guys are absolute hacks to everyone but their teenage/incel base. Look up what bill burr thinks of Tony

I think I only ever watched one of the roasts on comedy central in like 2010 thought it had funny moments, but never felt like I craved that kind of content.

Always felt there were moderately funny comedians but usually at least one who was a stream of homosexual jokes that even in my teens didn’t sit right. They peaked when they gave Betty White a second (third? Fourth?) career.
