Frankly, I may only rank those two. You don't have to pick five people. I'm only putting five on my ballot if there are five I genuinely like.

Right, this is important! You don’t maximize the power of voting against Cuomo unless you list five people who aren’t him. You should only list candidates who you genuinely prefer to Cuomo, but you should be able to find five of those.

I also left them off my ballot last time. But I think enough people didn’t pick five, so Adams was able to get in.

I don't think that was it at all. I think a lot of people didn't know about Adams's shenanigans until after the primary (& in many cases after the election—media coverage was over-focused on Yang during the primary.) Adams was popular with black voters, & also popular with tough-on-crime voters.
