The thing is that guerilla movements, unlike conventional militaries, don't do "unconditional surrender." So as long as Israel demands this, it can't win. A lose lose situation, like it's been since 7th Oct.
Who do you think won it? Because it was never Israels Military objective to conquer Libanon but they gave Hesbollah a huge blow that resulted in a loss of power in Lebanese politics which obviously favors Israel. (even though nearly all in Lebanon still hate Israel)
I think Israel does not want to "win" in this sense. Israel wants to get rid of as many of the Palestinians still living in Gaza as possible. An end of the war, even a victorious one, in which Hamas would surrender, would interrupt that operation. Defeating Hamas is the pretext, not the goal.
Perfect encapsulation. Hamas has been acting like a rational opponent, not a bunch of loons, for several months, if not more. Doesn't make them good people, but they are not a wild bunch of nuts.
